FALSE POSITIVES OUTBREAK

On rare occasions, legitimate messages can
be falsely quarantined as spam (often
called false positives). Or conversely,
messages might get past the filters and
reach user’s Inboxes. These may be caused by spam filters getting more aggressive among others.Or could it be because of the heartbleed attack?
This morning i came across some post on G+.
Hey, +Gmail , your spam filers seem to be
having trouble.
I started looking through my spambox because
Al Viro reported that he got spam-warning
bounces when emailing me. His email actually
arrived, and nothing from him was in the spam
traps, but something certainly seems to have
changed since April 23rd: there was a definite
uptick in false positives in my spam folder.
Maybe it's just a coincidence that there seems
to be an uptick in wrongly marked spam in the
last week, but have you perhaps been tweaking
gmail spam detection lately? Because if you
have, I think it might have become a bit too
aggressive.
Of course, maybe it's just that there does also
seem to be more spam senders that use
Markov chains to make their messages look
more like real email (or just cut and paste real
email into the bottom of the spam message).
So maybe that's poisoning your Bayesian filters.

Google is slipping a bit lately +4

I like how someone at Google will
surely read this due to the mere
fact you are Linus Torvalds. +36

Nice one

I'm having reverse problem since a
week or so. I'm seeing spam in my
inbox that I never used to see.
They definitely did some tweaking,
which is affecting users. +3

My emails sent thru Time Warner
Cable is bouncing recently because
there is some sort of new reverse
checks now.

Same as +Ronak Gandhi . I'm
getting more false negatives lately.

I seem to be having trouble with
totally legit emails from legit
companies being marked as spam.
The reason stated is that the sender
could not be verified. Perhaps this
has something to do with the
reissuing of most SSL certificates
due to heartbleed. Mail servers
haven't updated their cache?? +1

Good catch. Mine's the same way.
Thanks! +1

I think its weirds that gmail sends
all my itunes emails to spam

Security wise though, they seem to
be doing fairly well +Linus Torvalds .
I've watched my fair share of
yahoo accounts get compromised
and turned into spam bots. Is his
account perhaps a yahoo? Maybe
gmail is a little, teensy bit biased.

Wow. Found a lot of legit mailing list
emails in the spam directory! And it
seems it started earlier than 23rd
April.
Who knew +Linus Torvalds would
tell me this! +1

+Nihal Degala well, can't blame
Google for that. ITunes is malware
in my books 😈 +3

TIL there was something called
Bayesian filters. :D +1

+Linus Torvalds + Gaurav
Pandit sorry to hear about
misclassified messages. Please feel
free to reach out privately so we
can dig into what's behind the
issue. Naturally, spam filters are
constantly being tweaked, but we
work just as hard to ensure against
any false positives like you're
reporting. +3

I agree on this, I've been getting a
whole bunch of false positives
lately. +1

Maybe only for english version. Is
working fine for me

This might explain why Google is
reporting my IPs as a source of
spam to CBL (which ends up in XBL/
SpamHaus) even though it's just a
server sending alert e-mails to my
one Google Apps account, and the
IP is even specifically whitelisted.

You're the second person this week
that I've heard this complaint from.
I don't know that I've had any
false positives for spam, but I have
noticed a few spams sneak through
the filters in the last week.
Interesting, I've seen about a 10x
increase in spam in the last few
weeks.

I wonder if it had anything to do

Jeffrey Baker 36 minutes ago
Yeah, mailing list breakage is due to
Yahoo and AOL currently.
Chris Wadge 32 minutes ago
I've also seen an uptick in false
negatives, with some very, very
obvious spam blowing right through
the filters.
Wesley Kerfoot 11 minutes ago
Damn I just checked my spam
folder and found a very important
email :|

Anybody who wants to share
details, we'll definitely look into
this. Fighting spam is something we
take extremely seriously, as should
be apparent to all. Thanks.
