Late last year till early this year ATM fraud struck our banks. This was a new
emerging issue. It had come to the attention of the banks.Atm fraudsters or
scammers would use skimming devices to steal personal information and use
it later to sweep clean victims’ bank account. The scammers used spyware
and key-loggers.The spyware is a type of software that spies on what you do
on your computer. For instance,When you are at the atm area and entering
your pin no.The scammers used installed spy cameras that records all that
you do on the ATM. Key-loggers record what keys you pressed on your
keyboard. In most cases,The scammers install a metal card that copy the
information from the magnetic strip of ATM cards.Without the users’ prior
knowledge. Then there installed cameras spy on you while you are typing and
through that simple way your bank details have been
compromised.Sometimes they even fit fake keypads so as you type thinking
its the original keypad you enter information on the electronic device
installed.
.But however this could be long gone past since most banks are moving away from magnetic strip cards and taking up the chip and pin
technology to embrace secure transactions.Banks like KENYA COMMERCIAL BANK are already into the system. They send you this message
Dear (CLIENT NAME), your new chip & pin debit card is ready for collection at(NEAREST) KCB branch. Kindly come with your old card & original ID to collect it.
